Afghanistan: Two Royal Marines were killed in Helmand province
Two Royal Marines were killed yesterday as Taliban fighters ambushed a foot patrol with AK47s.
It brought the total British dead in Afghanistan to seven this month - the highest since June, when 13 were killed.
The marines, of 42 Commando, based in Plymouth, were blitzed by hidden enemies who were also armed with rocket-propelled grenades.
The men were on a reconnaissance mission north-west of Lashkar Gah in Helmand province.
Commander Paula Rowe said: “The loss of these two Royal Marines has come as a bitter and tragic blow to everyone in Task Force Helmand.
“While words cannot ease their devastation, our heartfelt condolences go out to their families, friends and comrades at this most painful time.”
